Okay, the tour started in Kinshasa, the capital city of Congo, where Yves, Kennedy's cousin would meet us. Yves drove us to the hotel for some needed rest. The next day, he picked and dropped us to the airport. The flight took us to the eastern part of Congo where the tour is supposed to start. Honestly, I felt worried not to mention this is my first tour outside Europe. But, when Kennedy, the boss of Hakuna Matata Tours Company, appeared right in front of us at the Goma airport, his assurance was soothing enough to keep us from worrying. He drove us to the hotel, helped us checked-in, and there we are in this new, exciting adventure ahead of us. Nathalie Leiba

I got in touch with Kennedy of Hakuna Matata Tours. This tour company takes people through Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya, and most importantly, Democratic Republic of Congo. There are very few tour operators in DRC at the moment, so I was relieved to come across Hakuna Matata. A native of Congo, Kennedy is extremely familiar with Goma and its surroundings. His most popular trip in Congo is up the impressive Nyiragongo Volcano, which is exactly what I was looking for. The company runs so many types of tours that are appealing to the adventurous spirit. Not only does Hakuna Matata have popular tours posted on their website, but they will also put together a custom tour. If you request it, Hakuna Matata can arrange it. I also find the company appealing as a budget traveler- they can work with all budget types and make off-the-beaten-path trips accessible on a backpacker budget. They have an office in Bunugana, DR Congo, just across the Ugandan border. Most people visit this office for gorilla tracking in Congo (after all it is $100 cheaper than Uganda or Rwanda) Laura West

MOUNTAIN GORILLAS IN VIRUNGA

Track Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda, Uganda or Congo in 2 days

In the space of just two days there is a great tour option available to you if you are interested in African wildlife. A great way to end a longer tour of Africa, or a great way to extend you trip, this two day visit will undoubtedly leave you wanting more! Tracking gorillas in their natural habitat requires a permit and this is included in the price of this two day tour. The price is also inclusive of the driver, tour guide, and transport for your car whilst on safari. In addition to this, the price also covers your accommodation for the night at a quaint hotel or guest house.

Upon arrival at the airport, you will be met by your guide who will take you to the Volcanoes National Park ‘Parc National Des Volcans’ which is located in the north-western region of Rwanda and known for its volcanic terrain and its famous mountain gorillas. For clients travelling with low budget they can reach the national park with public bus. Highlights of the second day will include a morning dedicated to the region’s legendary primates. After breakfast, you will trek through the forests towards the border of the Virunga mountain range in the Volcanoes National Park to seek out one of the only remaining mountain gorilla families in the world (mountain gorillas are the most endangered species of all gorillas).

The park was the first of its kind in Africa and was created to protect the gorillas back in the 1920s. In the afternoon you will travel to Kigali to visit the Kigali Genocide memorial centre for an educational yet poignant experience. The rest of the afternoon can be spent at your leisure – shopping and relaxing before your transfer back to the airport ready for your departure. A short and sweet trip, you’ll be surprised at how much you can fit into just two action packed days!

HERE IS ME

HIPPOPOTAME IN RWINDI

I m a tour Operator in Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania and Kenya. I and my parterners owns a reputable and successful Travel tour company employing a team of professional local tour guides across the region, called Hakuna Matata Tours LMTD. I view myself as a citizen of the Great Lakes Region of Africa being born in Congo/ Bunagana city, just 500 metres from the Ugandan and 10 km from the Rwandan borders, providing me with an international perspective from a very early age. I completed my secondary education in Goma. Goma is the administrative and business centre of east Congo, nestled on the Rwandan border. Here, I benefited from further cultural exchanges, forging yet more international community ties, this time with Rwanda, adding to my sense of being an international citizen while gaining the prized Diploma in Accountancy and Finance. I then moved to Kenya to spend two intensive years studying English, returning to Congo in 2003 as peace began to flourish. A growing number of adventure tourists began arriving in Goma hoping to explore the wildlife especially within Virunga National park and the stunning landscapes around and on Nyiragongo Volcano. I became a well-known guide and translator, one of the few with fluent English in addition to Kinyarwanda, Lingala, Swahili and French. As my reputation grew among tourists and journalists who had began to specifically look for me, I established an association bringing together local tour guides, fixers and a range of service providers, and finally establishing the first tour company operating in Eastern Congo, Hakuna Matata Tours in 2004 with my wife, a graduate in Computer Science. Offering tours in Congo, Rwanda and Uganda, Hakuna Matata Tours, now offering tours in six of the African Great Lake countries, has experienced steady growth over the past four years with branch offices now open in Burundi, and Uganda. IN ADDITION, I BELIEVE THAT JESUS CHRIST THE ALLMIGHT GOD, AMEN

Hi Kennedy, How are you doing? I hope you are well and doing that wonderful thing you did for us. Showing us the way in congo to the gorillas. You are a wonderful and intelligent person and I hope that a lot of people will find you and make use of your services. You deserve it.

I met a Congolese named Kennedy, who spoke fairly good English and was a mine of information. After an hour of chatting it transpired that not only was he a member of VirtualTourist.com, but he had replied to a question I had posted on the Congo just a couple of weeks previous. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tt/7a2d2/#TL

Kennedy Ndayisenga Nari, the founder of Hakuna Mata Tours, was my tour guide while in Goma, DRC.  Not only was Kennedy and his other employees, gentle souls and trustworthy, but they also made sure we were completely safe as we drove through the city.  He did not candy-coat life in Goma.  Instead, he drove us around, speaking about the city’s past and the people as a means to better understand the difficulties the Congalise people must face day in and day out.  In order to really “see” a country, one must experience it with locals.  Therefore, I would have wanted no one other than Kennedy and his crew to show us Goma that day.   Sabrina Must
